College Basketball Bounces Back to Frisco with Conference USA Action

Much like the City of Frisco, Conference USA continues to push boundaries to become a brand of innovation. Last year’s C-USA Championship tournament held in Frisco was such a success they’re coming back for more.

This March 13-16, 2019, talent and community involvement will be showcased at the 2019 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships presented by Baylor Scott & White Sports Performance Center at The Star.

This means the road to the Final Four actually comes through Frisco. The teams who cut down the nets at The Ford Center on March 16 get an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. So, you may be wondering who’s coming to play?

Conference USA brings 12 Men’s and 12 Women’s Division I College teams to compete. Four Texas Teams are in the mix, including our own University of North Texas, Rice University, University of Texas at El Paso, and the University of Texas San Antonio.

The unique layout of the venue alone is intriguing enough to go check out a session. The Ford Center at The Star is a football field first and foremost, but it’s an adaptive chameleon as we know from seeing concerts stages and boxing rings fill the space.

There will be 2 basketball courts installed at The Star for Conference USA’s Men and Women athletes to play 22 games over the 4-day tournament. I repeat – that’s 22 games over the course of a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and, of course, culminating in crowning a 2019 champion after the finals on Saturday.

The economic impact of this four-day frenzy of basketball games is significant. Visit Frisco ran the numbers on the 2018 tournament and they surpassed expectations for the first year of hosting the event here. We’re talking a $4 Million economic impact on Frisco, with 1,400 jobs and 100,000 fans and visitors flooding into Frisco for the 4-day affair. Those dollars are a combination of things, one being all the dining out those visitors and teams do while they’re in town. An estimated $700,000 was spent on food and beverage from the basketball visitors.

UNT_WKU_EDIT_CUSAClearly, it’s significant to business owners and residents to have the privilege of hosting Conference USA again in 2019. Judy MacLeod, Conference USA Commissioner, said,

As one of the most sport-centric cities in the country, Frisco provides the perfect venue to propel the C-USA brand toward unprecedented heights. We endeavor to create a lasting impact on the community and invite fans and supporters to enjoy all that Frisco and the DFW area have to offer.
