Advancements in car technology have spurred movement in other sectors of transportation, particularly motorcycles. Electric cars have begun hitting the road years ago, and charging ports have popped up in certain areas. Now the roads will be seeing a new type of electric vehicle, an electric bike. Major companies are developing electric motorcycles, which should be ready by the end of 2019 or beginning of 2020.
One of, if not the most, popular brands of electric motorcycle is Zero Motorcycles. They have been producing prototype electric motorcycles for years, and continue pushing the market for electric motorcycles. The SR/F has a city range of about 200 miles if you purchase the power tank, with 161 miles of highway range. This model is available and would cost you about $20,000.
As a giant in the motorcycle market, Harley Davidson has decided to enter the electric market with its model, Livewire. The company says it’ll have a city range of 140 miles, with a highway range of 88 miles.
The company is taking pre-orders for the Livewire since the motorcycle will not be available until 2020. For $30,000 this bike could be yours.
While other companies have models coming soon or have models already on the road, BMW is taking a different approach. Instead of featuring their model, the BMW Motorrad Vision DC Roadster, as purchasable they intend to use it as a vision. BMW’s goal is to have an electric motorcycle that is easily identified as a BMW, similar to their car models.
Of course, with any purchase of a motorcycle, comes a motorcycle insurance policy. Like a helmet, motorcycle insurance is for your own protection, but unlike a helmet, motorcycle insurance is mandatory.
