Illinois Car Insurance–What Is Permissive Use?

There are many intricate aspects of an Illinois car insurance policy, much like all policies. It may seem as simple as being covered or not being covered but that is not the case. Have you ever been in a situation in which you’ve had to drive someone else’s car or vice versa? It can be stressful because it places even more responsibility on the shoulders of the driver. That is mainly due to the fact that many drivers are unaware of coverage that can make those worries disappear–Permissive Use.

Permissive Use

So, what is Permissive Use? To put it simply, it’s when you allow someone who is not listed on your insurance policy, or a member of your household, to drive your car. This is incredibly helpful but it also begs the question, by what criteria is someone determined to be a household member? Typically, a household member isn’t someone who simply lives in the same house as you do. It often refers to someone who is related to you and lives under the same roof as you do.

They usually must be related to you by blood, via adoption, or through marriage (wives, husbands, kids, uncles, cousins, etc.) Just to be safe, it’s always a good idea to take a look at your policy and see how they define it specifically. Look for the “definitions” section of the policy to find out how your policy considers someone to be a “household member”.

It’s important to know that not all insurance policies will allow permissive use. Always remember that you can add someone to your policy to allow them to drive your car with coverage. This is great in the case that your policy does not allow specific use, the other driver does not qualify as a household member, or the permissive use driver will be using your car often.
