You should often check your tire pressure because having tires that are not inflated properly can cause trouble in the long run. Incorrect tire pressure can lead to excessive wear, lower gas mileage, and might impact your vehicles handling. Here is what to look out for when dealing with tire pressure.
Recommended Tire Pressure
Every vehicle has a recommended number that the tire pressure should be at. There are multiple ways to find what numbers your tires should be. There is usually a sticker on the inside of the drivers door. You can also check the owner’s manual that comes with the car. Tire pressure is always measured by pounds per square inch (PSI).
Checking Your Tire Pressure
There’s two main ways to check your tire pressure. The first is by using a tire pressure gauge which you would use on the tire. The other way depends on the kind of car you have. If you have a more recent car there should be a menu on your dashboard that will tell you the tire pressure numbers. You should always check your tires when the weather gets cold cause that is a prime time for low tire pressure.
Putting Air Back in The Tire
If you need to put air into the tire you need an air compressor, there are multiple ways to find one. They are found at gas stations, typically you have to pay to use it. No more than maybe fifty cents for a couple minutes for air. For people that don’t want to use a gas stations air compressor, you can buy your own portable one. Some work on a battery charge and others can plug into your car’s auxiliary power outlet.
To put air in the tire, remove the valve cap put the hose nozzle onto the valve. The air should flow automatically unless it’s a manual air compressor. Check the dashboard menu on your car or use the tire pressure gauge to check if your air is at the right psi. If you go over you can let the air back out using the tire pressure gauge, you don’t want to go too far over the recommended psi cause that can lead to poor handling. Repeat the steps if needed for your other tires.
Dealing with tire air pressure can seem like a difficult task to do. However, once you’ve done it, the task becomes much easier and simple. It is also one of the most important things you can do for your car. Regular care of the tires can help your vehicle remain safe and reliable in the long run.
